Seus pais também eram atores, e sua mãe Judy Loe apareceu em vários programas televisivos e seriados britânicos. Seu pai, Richard Beckinsale, estrelou durante os anos 70, alguns filmes britânicos como Rising Damp, Porridge e The Lovers. Ele morreu em 1979 devido a um ataque cardíaco.

Kate consagrou-se pelo filme Pearl Harbor em 2001. Em 2003 destacou-se ainda mais ao interpretar a personagem Selene na série de filmes Anjos da noite (Underworld) e Anjos da Noite - A Evolução (Underworld: Evolution) de 2006. Em 2008 fez pequena participação na terceira sequência Anjos da Noite - A Revolução (Underworld: Rise of the Lycans), já que sua personagem não estaria envolvida na história de amor central do 3º filme. 

É casada com o diretor estadunidense Len Wiseman. Tem uma filha chamada Lily Sheen, nascida em 1999, do relacionamento que teve com o ator Michael Sheen.

Em 2009 Kate foi eleita pela revista Esquire com o título de "Mulher Mais Sexy Viva".

Em 2012 a atriz volta no papel da vampira Selene no filme Anjos da Noite 4.
